MISHAWAKA - Bertha Rottensteiner, 86, of Mishawaka, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2009, in her residence. Bertha was born on January 17, 1923, in Eunice, Louisiana, to the late Lusius and Ella (Mott) Bertrand.
Bertha was born and bred a Cajun; she was the fifth generation. She was the oldest of eight children. As the former Bertha Bertrand, she married Aloysius Rottensteiner on February 5, 1943, in Alexandria, LA. Aloysius passed away in 1985.
Survivors include her three children, Drucilla (Ted) Schmidt of Osceola, Denise (Ron) Mis of Mishawaka and John A. (Brenda) Rottensteiner of Mishawaka. Bertha was a loving and caring grandmother and great-grandmother to six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Leary Murphy of Lake Charles, LA; four brothers, Burley Bertrand of Eunice, LA, Dudley Bertrand of Mamou, LA, Auggbert "Eddie" Bertrand of Mishawaka, IN, and Lusius Bertrand of Lake Charles, LA.
Bertha was one the original "Rosie the Riveters" during WW II, working in the war factories to support the American troops. Bertha became a loving and caring wife, mother, homemaker and grandmother to her family, which she cherished most of all. Friends and family flocked to her for her love, generosity and homemade gumbo, "the best in town."
The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 5th, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 6th, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home, with Father Jeffery Largent officiating. Burial is to follow the service at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, IN.
