At the opening of the civil war, he ran away and joined the Union Army. He came north with John Shepherd and settled in Hennepin, where he has since resided. He united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Logan on January 8, 1867. Of this union, 5 children were born, 4 living. He was one of seven brothers, all who remained in the south.
