George Hubert Thompson, age 87, died Monday, September 28, 2009, at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Theodore Kye and Georgia Cook Thompson. He retired from Champion International in 1985 with 45 years of service as a paper inspector and was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Medford Thompson; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jane Thompson of Canton; and a niece and nephew. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Morning Star Cemetery Association Trust Fund, P. O. Box 1746, Canton, NC 28716.
