Benjamin Franklin McCartney Abt. 1846 Indiana - Aft. 31 Mar 1864 California

Benjamin Franklin McCartney was born about 1846 in Indiana. On 20 Nov 1850, he lived with his parents Nathaniel and Abigail (Parker) McCartney in Wills Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. Abigail's parents, John and Beulah Parker, lived next door.

The family reported assets of $2,500 in real estate in the 1850 Census.

Benjamin apparently went out the Oregon Trail with his family, arriving in Oregon in August of 1852. The family settled an Oregon Donation Land Claim, number 2167, of 328.92 acres near Scio, Linn, Oregon, on 25 Sep 1852. His father owned a mill as well as the land claim on Crabtree Creek.

Benjamin's father filed his will on 5 Jun 1856 and died on 7 Jun 1856 after an extended illness of consumption/TB. Nathaniel McCartney, an Oddfellow, was buried in the Odd Fellows Rural Cemetery in nearby Salem on 9 Jun 1856. Benjamin would have been about 10 years old when his father died.

Nathaniel's probate hearing was held on 3 Feb 1858 in Albany, Linn County.

It appears that Benjamin's mother sold Nathaniel's mill and half of his land and moved to Chico Township, Butte County, California sometime before 1860. There were well established roads between Oregon and California in this era. A local expert said there was stagecoach service and roadside inns all along the route. It's not known how the family moved but it's likely they moved by wagon.

Benjamin's youngest brother Thomas would have been about three years old during this move.

Benjamin appears in Chico Township in the 1860 census on 18 Jun 1860. His mother, listed as a farmer, reported $2,000 in assets on that census. Benjamin may have been counted twice in the 1860 census. He also matches the profile of the B. F. McCartney living with his cousin Josephine A. (McCartney) Bailey and her husband John Frank Bailey in Cosumnes, Sacramento, Calif., on 17 Jul 1860. It's possible he was boarding with them in order to attend school, a family priority.

His family had settled on a 120 acre land claim on the Aquos Noves Rancho or Hensley Grant between Dayton and Durham, just south of Chico, Calif.

The near final mention of Benjamin McCartney comes in the will of his mother Abigail. She signed her will on 14 Feb 1864 and died on 6 Mar 1864. Benjamin would have been about 18. Abigail willed him $2. He is also mentioned in her probate notice, which was filed on 31 Mar 1864.

There is no further record of this Benjamin Franklin McCartney, he may have fallen sick and died. Or he may have wandered off to the gold fields.
