Thelma Festerling

Thelma Ann (Bachelor) Festerling left this world to meet her Lord on October 5, 2009. She passed away at her home surrounded by her loving husband and family at the age of 72. A devoted wife and mother, a loyal friend and Christian, Thelma will be deeply missed by all who knew her. For over five years, she fought a courageous battle against Ovarian Cancer beating numerous odds and amazing everyone with her strength, bravery and faith. Thelma and her family are so grateful to each and every one who showed kindness and offered prayers throughout her prolonged illness. Thelma was born on December 29, 1936 in Montrose, Michigan, daughter to Hubert and Doris (Reed) Bachelor. Thelma moved to Petoskey with her family in 1945. She began school here in the 4th grade and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1954.
Following her graduation, Thelma began a career with, then, First State Bank and Trust where she worked until retirement from Old Kent Bank in 1996.

On August 17, 1957, Thelma married Don Festerling at the First Christian Church of Petoskey. They had celebrated 52 years of marriage. She loved spending her time with family and friends. She enjoyed winters in Florida and was active in The First Christian Church, where she served on several committees, sang in the choir and for many years helped organize the church sponsored food booth at the Emmet County Fair.

Thelma is survived by her husband Don and their children. Daughter, Julie Festerling-Tobolski (Jim) of Naperville, IL ; son Ted Festerling (Sondra) of Alanson, MI and grandchildren, Casey (13) and Kyle (10) Festerling, Sydney (11) and Colin (10) Tobolski. She is also survived by her sisters; Donna Longcore of Conway, Jean Mundt (Herb) of Spring Lake, MI Marilyn Burrows (George) of Petoskey, and her brothers; Herbert Bachelor (Marilyn) of Conway, Dale Bachelor (Nancy) of Boyne City and Allen Bachelor (Barb) of Petoskey; also, her many wonderful nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sister Ruth Evers and brother-in-laws; Jim Evers and Laurence Longcore; niece Beckie Rensel (Bachelor); nephews, Bernie Evers and Ronald Longcore. Visitation will be 4-8pm, October 6, at First Christian Church of Petoskey and offered just prior to the celebration of her life. The funeral service will be held October 7, 2:30 pm at The First Christian Church with Rev. George Burrows and Rev. Jeff Watton officiating. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends and family wishing to honor Thelma's memory with a charitable contribution are asked to consider The First Christian Church of Petoskey or Hospice of the Straits.
