ROY ADKINS DIES OF BEER PARTY INJURY
Inquest To Be Held Tomorrow Morning To Determine Legal Steps To Be Taken in Matter — Wayne Jackson Held Since Affray on Assault Charge — Officers Trying To Learn Events Which Led to Fight on Eve of Election — Family of Victim Is Destitute.

Roy Adkins, fatally stabbed in a fight at a campaign beer party in the west part of the city Monday night, died at 4 o'clock this morning in the Laughlin Hospital of a peritonitis infection. Adkins had been slashed across the abdomen with a pocket knife, said to have been wielded by Wayne Jackson, and a portion of his bowels protruded through the opening. The intestines had become dirty before he was taken to the hospital and it was practically hopeless for the hospital to expect a recovery.
Adkins body has been removed to the Dee Riley Funeral Home where an inquest is to be held at 8 o'clock Saturday morning.
Jackson, held in the county jail since the cutting affray, has been charged with assault. Another charge probably will be filed after the coroner's jury returns its verdict.
Officers have been unable to determine exactly what took place just prior to the slashing of Adkins on the Willard school grounds and this may be brought out at the inquest. It is not known just how many witnesses will be used at the inquest as the list had not been made out early this afternoon. There have been reports that Adkins was beating Jackson when the stabbing occurred, and other reports are that Adkins was stabbed during an argument with some of the men.
The Adkins family, living in bare rooms at 414 West Hickory street, consists of a mother and five children and they are said to be in destitute circumstances, and to have been on relief rolls.
The stabbing and subsequent death of Adkins has brought up the question of the time limit in which a man, supposed to have inflicted a wound which resulted in death, could be charged with the crime. Some attorneys stated that he could be charged if the man died within a year and a day of the wounding.
Mr. Adkins, whose full name was Roy Earl, was born Nov. 25. 1898, a son of James Samuel and Lydia Adelia Adkins. He had lived in Kirksville for several years, was married and the father of five children, the oldest of which is eight. He had been unemployed for the past several months.
Surviving are his parents, who live north of Brashear, his wife and children, a sister, Mrs. Opal Brackney, Kirksville; a brother, Jacob Adkins, Hurdland. A sister, Mrs. Laura McKim, preceded him in death. A brother died in Infancy.
Funeral services are to be held tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 at the Dee Riley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. J H. Lane, of Brashear. Burial will be made in Brashear Cemetery.
