Double Rites for Accident Victims
Double funeral rites for a widely known Mayhill widow and her daughter-in-law----victims of a rain wet mountain road auto tragedy will be conducted at 2 pm tomorrow in the Church of Christ, Mayhill. Lying in identical coffins will be Mrs. Maggie Curtis, 65, who was dead on arrival at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital and Mrs. Carrie Lou Curtis, 37, who died there several hours later.

The funeral sermon for both will be delivered by Robert Waller, of the Church of Christ of Artesia. Both burials will be in the Mayhill Cemetery.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Maggie Curtis will be; Doyle Scott, Cecil Barkley, Robert Dockray, Clay Thomason, Herbert Dockray and Cleve Dockray.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Carrie Lou Curtis will be Edward, Leonard and Verbal Scott and Henry and William Dockray.

The women me their death as a result of the car in which they were riding skidding from Highway 83 just west of the spring. Also injured were Mrs. Cara (Ellie) Curtis, 36 and Delores Kay Curtis, 18 daughter of Mrs. Carrie Lou Curtis and driver of the car. The car plunged down an embankment while a heavy rain was falling.

Tony Curtis, one of the original settlers of the Mayhill area and husband of Mrs. Maggie Curtis died several months ago in Carlsbad.

The widow was born Oct. 21, 1882 in Brown County, Texas and was brought to the Mayhill area as a baby.

Her survivors are three sons, Cara I Curtis of Mayhill, Lloyd A. of Alamogordo, and Veolan E. of Mayhill, nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; two brothers Lee Brantley,
Mayhill and Elza Brantley of Carlsbad; and three sisters, Mrs. Nola Watson, Hagerman, Mrs. Mamie Frizzell, Carlsbad, and Mrs. Billy Fleming, San Diego, California.

Survivors of Carrie Lou (Mrs. Veolan) Curtis are her husband of Mayhill; a son Richard James Showers, La Luz, two daughters, Mrs. Richard Grabbe, La Luz, and Delores Kay Curtis of Mayhill and five grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Mullins Hamilton Funeral Home between 3 and 4 pm today.
