As Wild Bill Hickok was the sheriff at Abilene, Kansas for a period of time it is likely that John could have known him. It is not a long distance between Longford, Kansas and Abilene, Kansas.
John moved to Kansas where he and his brother George homesteaded adjoining land in Clay County, Kansas. John's Land Patent June 7, 1877, lists several areas of Section 18 where George also has property.

One of the most difficult events in the life of John's son George Emrich, was the day he escorted his elderly father to the train at Longford that would take him to the National Soldiers Home at Hampton, Virginia. George knew it was the last time he would see his father alive. His young daughter Pearl always remembered the tears on her father's face as he said goodbye.
