Born in Berthelming, Lorraine, France, he came to America in 1843 on the ship Forrester, from Le Havre to New Orleans, with his wife and children. They settled near Paderborn. Two Hagen cousins also emigrated just after this, with their families and settled near French Village. Franz (Francois) was married to Anna Barbara Bruto and they had ten children: Catherine Wise, Maleleine, Marianne Hament, Marguerite Sindal, Magdelena Muren, Louis, Anne Marie, Rose, Christopher, and Elizabeth Benedic Opertin.
