MRS. LUCIUS GOOCH
Mrs. Helen Huffmaster Gooch, wife of the foregoing, daughter of James T. and Ellen A. Huffmaster. was born in Galveston. Her father, a Confederate soldier of Tennessee, was a resident of Galveston for sixty-six years. As he was an employee of Hutchings Sealy Bank for fifty years and a local preacher in the Methodist Church, it will be seen that he was a prominent and influential figure in Galveston's business and social affairs.
Mrs. Huffmaster was as well and favorably known as her husband. She was an outstanding educator of Southeast Texas. The Insular Institute of Galveston, a school for girls that attracted to its halls a large number of South Texas young women, was founded by her. Here she taught for many years, finding time in addition to participate in the leading church, musical and literary activities of Galveston. The influence of such a pair as Mr. and Mrs. Huffmaster can not be over estimated. That Helen, their daughter, developed into musician of note, a finished scholar, an effective church worker, a polished, charming social leader in any environment in which she is placed, is a natural consequence. Mrs. Gooch was educated in her Mother's school, the Insular Institute, going to Boston for additional musical training under the celebrated Carl Faelton, pianist. Naturally, she was active in the professional musical circles of Galveston before her marriage. Coming to Palestine as the bride of one of Anderson County's most prominent and popular bankers, she. naturally, took her rightful place as a leader in the religious, social and educational life of the community. She has taught a class in the Methodist Sunday School for many years. During the World War she was an indefatigable Red Cross worker in Canteen division. She belongs to the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y. M. C. A.; her D. A R. activities are discussed in the history of the William Findley Chapter, D. A. R. of which she is a charter member; she belongs to several literary and community clubs of Palestine; her activities in all the social and philanthropic interests of Palestine have been tireless.
Mrs. Gooch, at this writing, is spending some time with an invalid sister in Galveston, but her customary place is in Palestine at the Gooch family home on South Sycamore Street, where she and Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Smith and family reside.
