Crawford Claude Lingle was born on Nov. 16, 1877, in Morgan County, Indiana. He was the middle child and only son of James Alexander and Malissa J. (Guy) Lingle. Crawford had a sister, Lillie Viola, and a much younger sister, Myrtle Nola.
Crawford grew to be 5'8" and was of a slight build with light brown hair and blue eyes.
Crawford's father was a farmer. He died in 1900 when Crawford was twenty-two. Crawford continued to work the family farm alone.
Crawford was married on Jan 18, 1906, to Dessie A. Ellis. Together the couple had four children:

Two of the boys, Otis and James, died as children. Their daughter, Dorthy, married and had a son, but drowned as a very young woman. Only their son Verlis, out-lived them.
