South Dakota Governor. He graduated from Wisconsin's Galesville University in 1878 and the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1882, afterwards moving to Dakota Territory and establishing a law practice. After serving as McPherson County State's Attorney, from 1888 to 1891 he was Judge of the McPherson County Court. In 1892 he was elected Lieutenant Governor, serving from 1893 to 1897. From 1898 to 1900 Herreid was Chairman of the state Republican Committee. In 1900 he was elected Governor and served two terms, 1901 to 1905. His administration included reformation of the state penal code, and a reduction in railroad rates to make it easier for farmers to ship their crops to market. After leaving office he returned to his law practice in Aberdeen, also becoming active in several business interests, including serving as a Director of the Western Mutual Life Insurance Company, President of the Citizens Trust and Savings Bank and the Aberdeen Railway Company, and Vice President of the Dakota Central Telephone Company. During World War I he served as South Dakota's Federal Food Administrator and Chairman of the South Dakota Military Training Camps Association. Active in higher education, Herreid also served as a Trustee of the University of Wisconsin and South Dakota State University, and was a member of the South Dakota Board of Regents.
