Mettie and Jim seperated in Nov 1922. He left the house to live on the range. Shortly thereafter he went into Mexico for two years. In Aug 1924 he returned to New Mexico and brought Mettie and their children from New Mexico to Rancho Casa de Piedras in Chihuahua. Mettie stayed 3 months and returned to New Mexico with the children. She finished raising her children by herself.

In 1925 Jim started a union libre marriage with Martina. Who was the ranch cook.

They separated around 1934 (Martina died in 1944)

After Jim left Martina He courted and in Jan of 1935 he married a school teacher Josefa Lujan Lucero. They had 4 Children and a stillborn baby. All children were born in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Josefa died 11 Mar 1942 after the birth of her last child.

Jim Lafferty took his youngest children to San Diego California to raise and there in 1955 at age 80. He died of a stroke. He had wished to be cremated and scattered on his ranch in Roswell New Mexico but he was buried in San Diego, California. This is written by his youngest daughter.
