Susanna "Susan" Wood was the daughter and first born child of Samuel Wood and Rachel Ann Stevens Wood. She married Henry Sunderland (abt 1810 to abt 1876) on 27 Apr 1837 in Anne Arundel Co., MD.

They had known Sunderland children. She named 2 after her parents Samuel and Rachel. Susanna, Henry, Lemuel, Margaret E, and Priscilla are all buried here.

?Augustus (Henry paid for his schooling in 1851-52)

On the 1850 Calvert Co., MD census, I found Sailor Henry Sunderland, 40, with $4K in real estate; Susan, 31; Saml, 10; Henry J, 8; Rachel A J, 6; Susan, 5 and Margaret E, 1, all MD born.

On the 1860 District 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found farmer Henry Sunderland, 50; S Susannah, 40; "Samuel," 20; Henry, 18; Rachel, 17; Susannah, 15; Margaret, 11; Mary, 7; Priscilla, 5; Lewis, 4 and William, 2, all MD born.

On the 16 Aug 1870 Prince Frederick P.O., Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, i found farmer and planter Henry Sunderland, 60, with $3K in real estate and $1K in personal property; Susan, 50; Susana, 24; Margaret, 24; Josephine, 16; Priscilla, 14; Lewis Y, 12 and William, 10, all MD born.

On the inside back cover of Sarah E. Stevens Wood's (cabinet card) photo album, it lists her husband's siblings. Plus, it includes "Aunt Susanna (Aunt Jodie's mother) married Capt. Henry Sunderland."

Tombstone Inscriptions of Southern Anne Arundel County, Marlboro NSDAR, 1967, p. 8; Wife of Henry Sunderland, age 50 years.

The Story of the Methodists in Friendship, Anne Arundel County, Md. 1760-1975, Gladys M. Lassiter 1975, lists a grave in the old section, Lot 46 for H. Sunderland with no other notations. It is "assumed" that this is Susan's husband, Henry. (written by site creator)

The Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery main page on Findagrave shows an "original" cemetery map of part of the older section. #46 lists "H. Sunderland," next to Wm Whittington, #47; Jas WOOD, #50," Jos WOOD of S" (Samuel), #59; Jno Armiger, #52 and R. S. Griffith, #39. Susan is also in #46 and she has siblings Joseph Wm ahd James H., who I believe they are.

Henry or "H" and Susan are buried in the older section of the cemetery. (The only other H. Sunderlands that I can find on the Calvert Co., Maryland census are his son and grandson, both named Henry.)

Henry Sunderland is listed on the Mount Harmony School logs, paying tuition in 1851 and 1852 for Josiah born 1838, Lemuel born 1840, Henry J born 1841 and Augustus (1st and only mention). (Susan's father, Samuel Wood, is related to Augustavus AKA Gustavus Wood, who lived in the same area and had kids with a few of the same names.)

At the time of Henry's death he died seized and possessed of his 200 acres, called Sunderland Farm. It was deeded on 5 Dec 1885 to his wife Susan's brother in law (and later nephew), Francis Stevens, by Trustees by Decree in Circuit Court of Equity, passed 3 Jan 1885 in case of Amelia & Wallace Owings et al against Francis Stevens & others. The land was adjacent to Mrs. Kate Brown, heirs of Saml W Ward, Mrs. Richardson & heirs of Henry Owings of S & others. Calvert Co., MD Deed SS, book 7, p 59. Since the court house burned down in 1882, I suspect many papers are lost giving the full details of Henry's estate and deed(s).

See transcription of her marker below. The epitaph is from Matthew 5:8.

*I note Lemuel is recorded 3 times as Samuel or Saml on the 1850-1870 censuses. His gravestone clearly says Lemuel.
