He went by his middle name Monroe and worked as a Farmer and also for the G.M.O (GM&O) Railroad and was in a position that he was in a position to be able to get Charles Sickmeier II, his son-in-law, a job at what appears to be a track foreman since Charles had a crew working for him and was able to hire and fire workers. Records show he was a retired Farmer. He was married to Wilhelmina Dieckmann 4 August 1880 in Monroe Co., IL.
