Magdalene Pierce was born in Fermanagh County, Ireland, on September 8, 1860, and grew to womanhood in that place. At the age of twenty-two she came to America, making her home with her sister, Mrs. Rachel Fair, for two years. On March 30, 1883, she married James Baynam. For a period of two years they made their home in Ida County, later moving to Woodbury County near Pierson. To them two children were born, John who still resides at home and Mrs. Oscar Bertelsen of Correctionville. Mrs. Baynam passed away Saturday, july 17, 1926, following a stroke the previous Monday. Funeral services were held at the Good Hope Church with Rev. Masters of the Galva Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, two children, one grandson, Ralph Bertelsen, two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Fair of Sioux City and Mrs. Thomas Mayne of Alviso, California, and one brother, William Pierce of Brookborough, Ireland. In her girlhood she became a member of the Methodist Church in Ireland and has continued in that faith ever since. She has been an active and energetic worker in the Good Hope Church having greatly aided in the erection and furnishing of the church. In the early days of its history she taught Sunday school class, even before the building was completed.
