James arrived in Vietnam 16 October 1969 and was assigned to MABS-16, MAG-16, 1st Marine Air Wing.
James was a passenger aboard a CH-46A #153379 when the helicopter hit Nui Noi Mountain, 2 kilometers west of Hai Van Pass Heliport due to bad night weather conditions. James died as a result of injuries to the body during the crash.
