Musicologist. He is regarded as the single most important authority on the life and music of Franz Schubert, to whom he dedicated over 60 years of research. His seminal "Schubert: A Thematic Catalogue" (1950) established the chronology of Schubert's nearly 1000 compositions, only a fraction of which were published in the composer's lifetime. To this day they are identified by their "Deutsch numbers" (example, the String Quintet in C, D. 956). With his book "Schubert" (1914) Deutsch invented the "documentary biography", in which the narrative is put together almost entirely with contemporary documents. "The Schubert Reader" (1947) and "Schubert: Memoirs by His Friends" (1958) introduced much new information and dispelled many romantic misconceptions about the subject. He also wrote biographies of Handel (1955) and Mozart (1965). Deutsch was born in Vienna and studied art history there and at Graz, later becoming a professor at Vienna University. As a Jew he was forced into English exile in 1939 and taught at Cambridge before returning to Austria in 1951. For his contributions to Viennese culture he was interred in an honor grave at the Zentralfriedhof.
