His father, Ephraim Sherman Jr, accompanied them, but his mother Mary Whipple Sherman remained east, expecting to join the family when it was well established in the new home. Mary Whipple Sherman never came to Ohio, for her husband Ephraim Sherman Jr died in Vermilion in 1818. The following year, the whole Sherman family, who meanwhile had moved to that town, were all very ill with malaria, and Ephraim Sherman III also died. He was buried in a cemetery that eventually was washed into the lake, and the bones of both father and son were carried away by the waves.
