From ‘Missouri Democrat' July 12, 1858; DMR, July 11, 1858. ‘Fort Stewart (or Stuart) was named in honor of Lt. Col. Adam D. Steuart, who had resigned as Deputy Paymaster of the U.S. Army in 1855.' Fort Stewart was established as a fur-trading post in 1854 and was destroyed by fire in 1860. (There are a few crude sketches of the Fort that survive today.) Fort Stewart was about 57 channel-miles above Fort Union on the Missouri, although the land distance was about 35 miles. Its site was in present Dawson Co., MT.
Colonel Steuart was then stationed in New York in 1860, home in MO.
