Excerpts from -58 U.S. 116 - Adam Stewart v. The United States December Term, 1854 state that Stewart was commissioned by the President, in March, 1818, collector for the district of Michilimackinac, and inspector of the revenue for the port thereof; which office he held, by successive commissions, until 15th January, 1833. n 1st April, 1819, said Stewart was appointed by the secretary of the treasury, inspector of the customs for that port, which latter office he also continued to hold under this appointment, until the 15th January, 1833, and was allowed the per diem compensation, as inspector of the customs, up to 1st July, 1822, at the maximum of three dollars per day. This is the only case found of record of a collector holding, at the same time, the two offices of collector and of inspector of the customs.

Served in the War with Mexico. 1846-1848. He was brevetted Lt. Col. for meritorious conduct while serving in the enemy's country on May 20, 1848.

From ‘Missouri Democrat' July 12, 1858; DMR, July 11, 1858. ‘Fort Stewart (or Stuart) was named in honor of Lt. Col. Adam D. Steuart, who had resigned as Deputy Paymaster of the U.S. Army in 1855.' Fort Stewart was established as a fur-trading post in 1854 and was destroyed by fire in 1860. (There are a few crude sketches of the Fort that survive today.) Fort Stewart was about 57 channel-miles above Fort Union on the Missouri, although the land distance was about 35 miles. Its site was in present Dawson Co., MT.

Colonel Steuart was then stationed in New York in 1860, home in MO.

Mary and A. Duncan Steuart had one son, Adam Steuart according to what documentation that I can find on them.*LJS The son is not listed on the 1860 census, so I presume he died young.

Since Col. Steuart had resigned his position as Deputy Paymaster of the U.S. Army in 1855, rank of Col, but was stationed in NY. in 1860, do not know whether or not if this was in a civilian capacity. The following is his enlistment records during the Civil War. His enlistment rank was 'Major'(he would have been age 65 at enlistment), brevetted out at 'Lt. Col.' His death was considered a casuality of the war.

Steuart- On Thursday morning, October 17th, at four o'clock, at the New York Hotel, Colonel A. D. Steuart, Paymaster United States Army, aged 71 years. Officers and his friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, at Grace Church, Broadway, this (Saturday) afternoon, at four o'clock, without further notice. The remains will be taken to Louisville, Ky., for interment. Louisville, St. Louis, and Washington, papers please copy. The above researched and compiled by Laura J. Stewart.
