Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Uckermunde in what was then the Empire of Prussia (now located in Western Pomerania Germany), he had been baptized as "Emil Gustav Victor Beeger." He served in the United States Army as "Henry Beeger" during the Mexican War before deserting in 1846. He re-joined the Union army during the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to Captain before being transferred to the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Rising to the rank of Colonel, he commanded brigades at Prairie Grove, Fort Morgan, and Fort Blakely, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 "for gallant and meritorious services during the war."
