GEORGE E. PHELPS DIES SUDDENLY; SERVICES AT 10 TOMORROW MORNING
George E. Phelps, widely known Carthage attorney and member of a prominent pioneer Carthage family, died suddenly at 7:40 Saturday night in the family home, 1601 Grand Avenue following was apparently was a heart attack. He suffered the fatal seizure while preparing to take a shower and the death was almost instantaneous. He was 48.
The prominent Carthage lawyer, civic leader, land owner and financier, so far as known, was in the best of health and his sudden passing stunned the entire community.
FUNERAL TOMORROW MORNING
Solemn Requiem High mass for Mr. Phelps will be at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at St. Ann's Catholic church, of which he was a member. The Rev. John Weissler, OMI administrator of St. Ann's parish, will celebrate the Mass.
The Rev. A. Simon, O.M.I. Buffalo, Minnesota is expected to be here for the Mass and will serve as deacon. The Rev. G. Ingolsby, pastor of St. Peter's parish of Joplin, will be the sub deacon.
Father Simon has visited here often, having been a former Provincial of the Belleville, Illinois Province of the Oblate Fathers.
Member of the Carthage Lawyers Association will attend the Mass. The Rosary will be recited at 8 tonight at the Ulmer funeral home. All friends of the family are invited to attend the Rosary if they desire.
George E. Phelps was born in Carthage on February 8, 1910. He was a son of Mrs. W. H. Phelps of Grand Avenue and the late Col. W. H. Phelps, early day Carthage attorney.
After completing work in the elementary school here, he attended a preparatory school at St. Mary's Kansas. He then entered Georgetown preparatory school in Washington, D.C., following which enrolled in Georgetown University where he spent a year, transferring to the University of Missouri where he received his law degree.
BEGAN LAW CAREER HERE
Upon admission to the bar he began his legal career with the firm of McReynolds & Flanigan and was associated with that firm until several years ago when he withdrew and opened his own office. At the time of his death he had offices in the Professional Building, corner of Fourth and Maple.
He was married December 28, 1934 in Carthage to Miss Elizabeth O'Keefe, daughter of Mrs. John O'Keefe, 1401 South Garrison, and the late Mr. O'Keefe.
Surviving are his wife,
two sons;
George E. Phelps, Jr., a post-graduate student at Rice Institute, Houston, Texas and John O'Keefe Phelps, a student at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
His mother, Mrs. W. H. Phelps, 1146 Grand Avenue
and a half sister, Mrs. Florence Rohert, Los Angeles.
SERVED IN LEGISLATURE IN 1935
George Phelps was elected to the Missouri legislature from the Carthage district in the fall election of 1934 and served in the 1935 session. He was a Democrat.
In serving as an attorney and in the legislature he followed in the steps of his father, Colonel Phelps. The latter was a prominent attorney and Democratic leader in the state.
Colonel Phelps served in both the house and the state senate from Jasper County. He was attorney for the Missouri Pacific for many years. Colonel Phelps died here about 40 years ago.
George Phelps at the time of death was president of the Jasper County Savings and Loan Association, a director and attorney for Leggett & Platt, Inc., director and attorney for the Bank of Carthage and member of the perpetual care fund board of Park Cemetery Association.
He was a former member of the Board of Public Works, having served two terms on this organization, which directs operations of Carthage's municipal light and water plant.
