James Allen was a Captain in the local militia during the French and Indian War which preceded the Revolutionary War, where he was a "private." His U.S. Government issue veteran's marker says "Rev. Soldier, 1810"

At unknown date, he married Margaret Anderson (Jos A Waddell)

There were more than 1 James Allen in Augusta County in the 1700's. The younger one may have been called "Jr.," meaning he was the younger of the two, without direct kinship.

Capt. James Allen was the first son of William Allen and is believed have come here from Ireland* when James was about age seven. Siblings Hugh and John were born in America. James resided about 8 miles north of Staunton, at Willow Spout. He was an Elder in the nearby Augusta Stone Church since 1756. The same year, he was Captain of the Virginia militia fighting the Indians. On 10 Oct 1774 he took part in the Battle of Point Pleasant in Dunsmore's War. He saw his brother Hugh killed there. James married Margaret Anderson, the daughter of John Anderson. According to Joseph Addison Waddell's Annals of Augusta County, Virginia Supplement, Richmond, VA, 1888, page 410 - 411. Plus see The Allen, 1902 update of same book, p 153-154 (see photo). Give more family data.

Based on the above Waddell book, James arrived in Virginia in 1723, at age 7, since he was age 94 when he died. His brother Lieut. Hugh Allen was born about 29 years later on "18 Dec 1745"and died in battle on 10 Oct 1774. Hugh Allen also has a memorial/cenotaph.

James and Margaret had 10 known Allen children:
Jane, "15 Mar 1755" (Capt. Jas Trimble), below
Ann, (Col. Geo Poage)

Page 361.--30th May, 1809 (written). James Allen's will--To wife, Margaret; son, James; daughter, Polly Lewis; to grandsons, Allen Trimble, Allen Page, Allen McCue; has heretofore deeded land to his children. Executors, sons William and James. Teste: James Allen, Peter Hanger, James Kinney. Proved, 28th May, 1810. James qualifies. Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia : Extracted From the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800 by Augusta County, Vol. 3, p 235.

James died in 1810, before 28 May, when his will was proven in Augusta Co., Virginia. If he was born in "1716," and served in our Revolutionary War, he would have been about age 59 in 1775, when it began. The ages to serve in Virginia were "between 16 and 60." If he was born in 1716, then he was about 94 years old in 1810, very very old for the times.

*The Allens were Scots-Irish, as was early Augusta County and surrounding area. The mostly Protestant Ireland was renamed Northern Ireland in 1921, where I believe he was from. Then mostly Catholic Ireland in the south, became the Republic of Ireland.

MKM shared that Capt. James Allen died on 10 May 1810 in Fort Defiance, Augusta Co., VA. Waiting for reliable documentation.
