The son of Charles E. and Bertha Graves, Bertram or "Bert" had an older brother Kanston and a younger sister Gladys. His father Charles was a successful Ad Man who had immigrated from Ireland not long before the turn of the century. His mother's parents were from France and Germany.
His mother, Bertha, died tragically when her children were still young and Charles remarried to Winifred Waddell the following year. The children attended private schools and lived a life of ease complete with trips to Europe.
Bert grew up, married twice and settled in Florida where he sold real estate. He had three children, Bertram Jr. and Mary Francis, by his first wife, Ruby, and a third by his second wife, Florence. Their son, Curtis, was killed during the Six Day War in 1967 by Isreali aircraft gun fire. He was on a navy ship in the Mediterranean Sea monitoring the war. Bertram died in 1951 of cancer.
