Adams was a gunner on a B-24D bomber assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 492nd Bombardment Squadron. On March 26, 1943 they were number one to take off for a mission from Alipore Airdrome in India. They failed to clear some palm trees at the end of the runway, crashed, and eight of the nine men aboard were killed. Only the flight engineer survived.

Adams received the Purple Heart.
