Rev. John Thomas Freeman, Jr. was born on July 25, 1813 in Greene Co., Tennessee. He was the son of John Thomas Freeman, Sr. (1782-1823) and Mary "Polly" Watson (1782-1835), the oldest of their four known children. Both of John Jr.'s parents were born in North Carolina and both died in Tennessee. They were married on Dec. 19, 1809 in Greene Co., TN.

On June 9, 1834, John married Anna "Annie" Sharp (1812-1901) in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. He was 20 years of age. She was 21. Anna was the daughter of William Sharp (1765-1840) and Catherine Graves (1770-1840). Both of her parents were born in Orange Co., NC and both are thought to have died in Claiborne Co., Tennessee.

John was a farmer and a preacher. According to church historian, Kathy Chumley, John (76) was instrumental in organizing the Underwood Grove Missionary Baptist Church (1891). He was one of four elders.

He and his wife, Annie, were married for 67 years and had 11 known children. They were, in order of their birth, William G. Freeman (1835-1924), Catherine Jane "Katie" Freeman (1836-1916), James Boston Freeman (1838-1853), Henry M. Freeman (1839-1839), John Gilbert Freeman (1839- ?), Mary Elizabeth Freeman (1843-1917), Hugh Lockhart Freeman (1846-1927), Isaac Thomas Freeman (1848-1946), Moses Davis Freeman (1851-1930) Andrew Johnson Freeman (1857-1927) and Sarah Barthena Freeman (1858-1858).

John's wife, Anna, died on Dec. 21, 1901 in Tazewell, Claiborne Co., TN at the age of 89. She was buried on their Tazewell family farm.

John died nine years later at the age of 97 on Dec. 22, 1910, also in Tazewell. He too, was buried on the family farm, next to his wife, Anna. Their burial site is now called the Freeman Cemetery. They are the only known burials in this little cemetery.
