Annie E. Bell was born August 1852 in Rome, Oneida County, New York. Her actual birthdate and parents' names were not completed on her Veterans' Home application; however, she gave August 1852 as her birthdate in the 1900 Walla Walla, Washington census. [In 1956, her grandson, Thomas Bell of Los Angeles, California, wrote several letters requesting this information from the Home].
She married Norris N. Bell in Seattle, Washington on August 4, 1873. He was a civil war veteran who served in Companies "K" and "A" of 1st Colorado Cavalry. Mr. Bell died in Seattle February 3, 1914. Mrs. Bell received a $25 a month widow's pension on Certificate No. 844.642. The couple were divorced for several years before he died and he did not list her on his 1912 application to enter the Old Soldiers' Home in Orting. Mrs. Bell was listed as divorced in the 1900 census for Walla Walla. Her occupation was servant and she and her son Ivan C., age 10, were living in a boarding house. Mrs. Bell indicated that all five of her children were still living at that time.
When she applied for membership in the Veterans' Home Cemetery in July 1919, she had three living children: Grace Ruthford, Tacoma, Washington; Nettie Bell Billings, address unknown; and I.[Ivan] C. Bell, San Diego, California. The names of her other two children are not known.
Mrs. Bell died at the age of 70 years on 23 December 1924 at the Washington Veterans' Home. She is buried in the Home Cemetery in section 42 while Mr. Bell is buried in section 5. There is no obituary for Annie in either the Port Orchard Independent or Walla Walla Bulletin newspapers, per research conducted by Shirley Dallas of the Washington State Library.
