OTTAWA -- Alberta B. Conus, 85, Ottawa, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at home.

She was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Springfield, Mo., to William Thomas and Jessie Bell Bartlett Peters. She attended schools in Springfield where she was runner-up in the Miss Springfield contest at age 19. She was an apprentice at a beauty shop before she opened Alberta's Beauty Nook in Springfield in 1934.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Child's Study Club and Navy Mothers Club, all in Ottawa.

She and Art Conus were married July 25, 1936, in Springfield, Mo. They moved to Ottawa the same year. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Glen Arthur Conus, Ottawa; a sister, Katherine Avery, Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

Mrs. Conus will lie in state after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
