Marion enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 6 October 1861 at the age of 27. He was mustered as a Sergeant in Company H of the 37th North Carolina Infantry on 20 Nov 1861. Promoted to full 1st Sergeant (Estimated day of Promo) on 15 Mar 1862 and later reduced to Private on 1 Oct 1862. He died of disease as a prisoner of war on 9 Jun 1864 in Washington, DC.
