MILDRED "HONEY" LOUISE BURKS Passed away on June 23, 2006 in Oakland, CA after a short illness. Born in Patterson, LA on January 22, 1934 to Milton and Esther Curtis. She moved to Oakland in 1951, with her family. She was an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, serving in many ways including Youth Director, Sunday School Teacher and Pianist for over 30 years. She was also the Northern California Region President of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mildred volunteered for many organizations and charities throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter Valerie Scott-Cardenas and son-in-law, Ronald Cardenas of Portland, OR, grandchildren, Michael Thomas of Sacramento, Michelle and Mikala Thomas of Suisun, great granddaughter Xiana Greene of Suisun, sisters Rosemary Slater of Oakland and Marilyn Howard of Victorville, CA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mildred lived a life committed to giving of herself and her love, she will be missed by all who knew her. Preceded in death by her husband, Carl Burks, her parents and her sister, Gwendolyn Hunt. Viewing is 1-7pm, Thursday, June 29, 2006 at McNary-Morgan-Greene&Jackson Mortuary, 3630 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, 510-848-1238. Funeral service 11am, Friday, June 30, 2006 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1203 Willow Street, Oakland, 510-893-2932. Interment will be at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, Richmond. McNary-Morgan-Greene&Jackson (510) 848-1238.
