He was the son of John Rufus Edie and Mary Kiernan Edie.
On February 17, 1866 as John R. Edie, he married Julia McCauley at the District of Columbia.
They were the parents of two children.

He was at the first Battle of Bull Run and later on the staff of General Meade as Ordnance Officer of the Army of the Potomac from August 1863 to December 1864.
He was brevetted Captain August 1, 1864 and Major on March 13, 1865.
