Daughter of W.F. Brandes and​ Ellis (pronounced Alice) Laas.
At age 18, Norma is shown in the census living with her mother's sister, Ida Laas Voelkel, and her family. In fact, Norma was buried in the same cemetery as her aunt. Her mother died when she was a baby. In 1900, her uncle Edward Laas had custody of her. She died at age 48 of severe burns from a kitchen fire in Marfa.
