The Old Guard of the City of New York was organized as the Light Guard in 1826 and as the City Guard in 1833. It reorganized and incorporated as the Old Guard in 1868. It was a military company governed like the National Guard, but was formed as a club to afford pecuniary relief to indigent or reduced members and their widows and children and to promote social union and fellowship. Members were over 30 years of age and qualified by military service. The yearly Old Guard Ball was a brilliant social festival.
