Company in New York City until May 3, 1861 when he Enlisted in the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry (Hawkin's Zouaves) He was mustered into service on May 4,1861 in Company I,to serve two years service as Corporal,reduced May 1,1862, Promoted to Corporal on July 5,1862,mustered out with Company on May 20,1863.After the war he went to France,where he entered the art studios of Bonner & Jerome in Paris and also represented the United States Government as the representative of American artists at the Paris Exposition.Was the illustrator of "The Standard History of the United States" and of the "Story of the Greater Nations."He married Martha Louise Watson of NY on June 13,1865 in St.Stephens Church in New York and they had 10 children.He was a reknowned painter and illustrator during his lifetime, doing several books. He died Dec 6,1917 in Brooklyn and is buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in NY.
