Robert Bateman, son of William, brother of Henry, grew up in the Derbyshire/Lancastershire area of England. At an early age he went to work in the coal mines. On 15 June 1844 he was married to Minerva Gaunt, daughter of John and Ann (Hinchliff) Gaunt.
A daughter (Anna) was born in 1847 and soon after that the family decided to move to the United States, where other family members had migrated earlier. Robert and his brother went first and settled near Rock Island, ILL, where Robert obtained work in the coal mines. By this time, Minerva was far along in her second pregnancy, but the little family wanted to be together so she, along with her daughter, mother and other family members, set sail. Upon arriving in New Orleans, it was evident that a birth was eminent, so the group remained there until little Edna was born and Minerva was able to travel. The family settled on a small farm near Hamlet, Mercer County, Illinois.
When the Civil War broke out, Robert was beyond the age to be called up, but he wanted to serve his new country and enlisted in Co. B, 126th Illinois Infantry, serving over three years as a hospital orderly. By the time he was mustered out, he was ill with chronic dysentery, received a small pension and never again was in good health.
In the mid 1870s, Robert and Minerva, their two married daughters and their families, along with other relatives, moved west by wagon train to Kansas, settling near Clifton, in Washington County. After the death of his wife, Robert moved to Stockton, Rooks County, to be near their daughter, Edna. It was there that Robert passed away in 1906.
