On Saturday, December 19, 1953 at approximately 3 P.M., Officer Colonna, 27, of 6518 Elmwood av., was injured when his motorcycle collided with a police patrol car at 11th and Vine Streets. The car was operated by Patrolman John Martin, 25, of 1515 E. Pastorius st. Both officers were headed for two-alarm fire at 8th and Berks streets. Colonna was traveling north on 11th st., and Martin east on Vine. After the collision the police car careened into a light standard, knocking it over. The motorcycle was demolished in the collision and Colonna suffered critical head injuries. Martin was treated at Hahnemann for minor injuries. Colonna was unconscious when taken to Hahnemann Hospital in a police emergency patrol wagon. Physicians immediately summoned a priest, who administered the last rites of the Catholic Church. His relatives were also called to his bedside.

Colonna died in the afternoon of Christmas Eve in Hahnemann Hospital. Officer Colonna had been out of the Police Academy only three months. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was assigned Highway Patrol upon his appointment to the Department on September 21, 1953. he was unmarried and lived with his father, a widower. He was also survived by five sisters.

The Philadelphia Inquirer presented a $1,000 check to Officer Colonna's father.
