Juel Leo Fadness was born April 10, 1923 on his parents farm near Velva, McHenry Co., North Dakota. He was the second of four children born to Martin and Anna (Jensen) Fadness. Juel attended Velva area schools and loved growing up on the prairie. He had very fond memories of swimming with friends in the Mouse River, playing with cousins and Fourth of July celebrations.
Juel worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps before serving in the Army in World War II. After his discharge he worked for the Rural Electrification Administration.
On October 31, 1947 Juel married Grace Okins in Towner, ND. After the births of their two daughters, they moved to Oregon in 1952, settling first in Mapleton, then Albany where Juel worked in the plywood mills.
Juel moved his family to Portland in 1957 where he was employed by Langendorf Bakery and United Grocers as a truck mechanic until he retired in 1985.
Juel and Grace were long-time members of St. Mark's Lutheran in Portland. They later were members of Resurrection Lutheran.
Although Juel lived in Oregon for nearly 56 years, he always thought of North Dakota as "home", and enjoyed trips back to visit family and friends. He also enjoyed many trips to Hawaii, RV camping, western movies, country music, flying, all creatures big and small and of course the great outdoors.
Juel died in Portland on February 23, 2008. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Grace, two daughters, and three grandchildren.
