Elizabeth Gertrude ‘Betty' Boyce, 89, of North Platte, Neb., died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at her home in North Platte.
Betty was born Oct. 24, 1919, to George L. and Helena Albertina Gruenstern Ryerson in Everett, Wash. She spent her high school years in Seattle, Wash., where she graduated from Queen Anne High School and then attended the University of Washington.
She married Clifford Everett Boyce in 1944 in Snohomish, Wash., while he was in the service during WWII. After his discharge in 1946 they moved to the family farm south of Wauneta, Neb. While on the farm she was involved in Extension and was a 4-H leader for 10 years.
They moved to North Platte in 1956 where she began employment with Memorial Hospital in the medical records department and became supervisor from 1957 to 1962. They moved to Hastings, Neb., in 1963 and Betty was a medical records abstract person at Mary Lanning Hospital before moving back to North Platte and Memorial Hospital. She retired from Great Plains Regional Medical Center and then worked for the Orthopedic Surgical Group.
Betty received registry as an accredited record technician in September 1965. She attended, at various times, seminars concerning medical records in Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Lincoln. She was the Nebraska representative to the National Medical Records Convention in Las Vegas and Washington, DC.
Betty was nominated chairperson for the Nebraska Medical Records Association. She did consulting work with records in coding of medical requirements of joint commissions for hospital accreditation in Oxford, Sutherland, Cambridge, Pender and Oberlin, Kan.
She handled the Lincoln County American Cancer Society Memorials for years, helped with immunization clinics, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 163 since 1962 and a Pinochle Club.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Paige, and husband, Jon Michael Eaves of Peyton, Colo.; three grandsons: Gen. Michael Martin of Eagle, Colo., Shawn Wayne Martin of Sequim, Wash., and Craig Clifford Martin and wife, Julie, of Joliet, Ill.; her sister, Frances Hottendorf of Curtis, Wash., and other family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her parents; a sister, Anita Counsellor and a cousin, Violet Nichols.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the American Cancer Fund. A family greeting and book signing will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CT. Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, followed by a short prayer service at 7:30 p.m. CT with Pastor Carl Pullmann officiating. The casket will not be open.
Graveside service and burial will be 10:00 a.m. MT on Friday in the Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta, Neb.
