Waynesville—Reverend Russell Lowell Young, Jr., age 80, 41 Rolling Green Drive, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at Thoms Rehabilitation Hospital. A native of Columbia, SC, he had lived in Haywood County for the past 33 years. He was the son of the late Reverend Russell Lowell Young, Sr. and Anne Matilda Snelson Young. He was a graduate of Norwood High School, Norwood, NC. He was a 1941 graduate of Brevard College and graduated from Duke University in 1943 with a B.A. Degree in Chemistry. He served in the US Army during World War II from 1943–46. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy. He accepted a call to enter the ministry and graduated from Duke University with a Master of Divinity in 1953. As a minister, he served the following appointments in the WNC Conference of the United Methodist Church: First United Methodist Church of Asheboro, Reeds Charge in Lexington, Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Winston Salem, Cliffside United Methodist Church, West Jefferson United Methodist Church, and First United Methodist Church of Conover. He also served on the staff of the World Methodist Council at Lake Junaluska from 1969–1979. He also was a pharmacist at Hazelwood Pharmacy for 15 years. He was an Eagle Scout, a former member of the Rotary Club of West Jefferson and was a current member of the Waynesville Kiwanis Club. He was survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathryn Bannister Young, and a daughter, Nancy Y. Ferguson, and her husband, Jerry Neil Ferguson, of Clyde. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells, and Reverend Dr. John Christy officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be members and spouses of the Waynesville Kiwanis Club. Memorials may be made to Children's Home Society, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415 or First United Methodist Church of Waynesville Building Fund, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to one's favorite charity.
