Avis F. Allen, 80, entered into new life on Monday, March 23, 2009, at the Donnellson Care Center, Donnellson, Iowa.

She was born Dec. 4, 1928, in rural Wapello County, the daughter of Rex and Edna Fern (Epperly) Bull.

Avis graduated in 1946 from Eldon High School and was Valedictorian of her class. She had attended the St. Joseph Nursing School in Ottumwa.

On Sept. 21, 1947, Avis and Velven Leroy Allen were united in marriage in Eldon. Velven preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1996. Four sons were born to this union, Raymond Keith, Russell Wayne, Richard Dale and Roy Edward. Together they owned and operated Allen's Garage for several years. Avis also worked for the Cardinal Community School District, the city of Eldon as City Clerk. Avis volunteered as an AARP tax preparer and helped establish the Eldon Senior Meals. She belonged to the Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon. She advocated for the Eldon Public Library serving on the Board of Trustees for many years. Avis especially loved time with her family and friends, earning the nickname "Giggles" at the care center for her infectious laughter. Activities and interests she enjoyed were gardening, reading, playing cards, baking and solving crossword puzzles.

Avis is survived by three sons, Raymond Keith (Nadine) Allen of Donnellson, Russell Wayne (Ann) Allen of Palatine, Ill., Richard Dale (Terri) Allen of Sugar Grove, Ill.; one brother, Ivan (Dorris) Bull of Green Valley, Ariz., and two sisters, Alice Barbour of Ottumwa and Ferris (Jim) Leazer of Monument, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Christina (Mark) Paradis, Heidi Allen, Shaun Allen, Megan Allen, Jason Allen, Rachel Allen, Lauren Allen, Ryan Allen and one great-granddaughter, Lisabetta Paradis. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Roy Edward Allen.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Eldon Christian Church in Eldon with Pastor David Albert officiating. Casket bearers will be Shaun Allen, Mark Paradis, Jason Allen, Deb Allen and Jim Newberry.
