Robert and Mae Hettie Oates Adams lived the first years of their marriage in Angelina County where Robert Adams worked as a laborer in a saw mill. From Angelina County, Robert and Mae Hettie Adams moved to Holly Springs in western Newton County where they settled and farmed.
Robert and Mae Hettie Adams had no children of their own. They helped raise the children of one of Robert's brothers, and they took in two foster daughters, Ethel and Lula Mae Lynch, who they reared as their own.
Robert and Mae Hettie Adams were married 54 years when Robert Adams died in the hospital in Jasper, Texas, in 1949. Mae Hettie Adams lived the last years of her life in the Goff Nursing Home in Newton, Texas.
At her death in 1958, Mae Hettie Oates Adams was survived by her two foster daughters, Ethel Kasten and Lula Mae Hanks.
