Mr. Hilliard worked as a barber at Hilliard's Barber Shop for 60 years and was a member of the Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.
On Nov. 30, 1953, he married the former Ethel May Housden, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, David Layton Hilliard Jr. of Luray, and Johnie Layton Hilliard of Stanley; four brothers, Adolph, Lilliard and Williard Hilliard, all of Stanley, and William Paul Hilliard of Alabama; a sister, Joyce Ann Comer of Stanley; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Carlton Hilliard; and a sister, Marie Frances Stoneberger.

The Rev. Charles R. Turner will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, where visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Monday, March 9. Burial will be at Leake's Chapel Cemetery in Stanley.
