Mary Lavina's father was pastor of the War Gap Baptist Church when he felt called to "preach the gospel" in Texas. Isaac, his wife, Catherine, and their single children traveled to Texas by train. The two older daughters had married Pridemore brothers. Mary Lavina remembered her two married sisters running along the tracks wringing their hands and crying as the train pulled out from the station. She never saw them again. Mary Lavina's family lived in several locations in Texas and were in the Wise-Jack County area when she married John Hamlin Mattox. They lived in a log cabin on the Cundiff - Crafton road in Jack County. Her parents lived nearby and her father held preaching for the Cundiff community in front of his cabin. A little neighbor girl who attended with her family told years later how the people sat around on the ground and Bro. Rimer sat in his cabin doorway to preach. She said he filled the doorway and was the biggest man she had seen. Mary Lavina's husband did not expect his young wife to work in the fields or with the stock like other neighbors' wives. Their children were born in the log cabin and one baby died. Mary Lavina sat by the fireplace all night with the sick baby in her lap. Next morning she realized the baby was dead. Little Alta Vera was the first of the family to be buried in the Cundiff Cemetery. John later built a box board house across the road on higher ground. The children married and brought grandchildren to visit. Mary Lavina became their beloved Granny Mattox. Thirteen years after John died, Mary Lavina was laid to rest beside him. Son and daughter, Bill and Carrie, never married and devoted their lives to caring for their parents, siblings and then each other. When Mary Lavina's family gathered, there was always music and her natural talent was passed down through her descendants. We suspect Granny Mattox is singing with the angels now.
