Caroline Lake Collings was a true pioneer. By virtue of her birth in Indianapolis in 1830 (only 8 years after the city's founding), she is an ancestor of The Society of Indiana Pioneers. She was a Civil War widow, having lost her husband, Dr. Isaac Spencer Collings, to illness in Texas, where he was still serving with the 57th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, at the end of the war. Later, like her father, Elisha Warford Lake, she was a pioneer in Kansas.
