McGARY BURIAL: Announcement of Editor's Death Was a Shock to Beaumont. FUNERAL IS IMPRESSIVE: Messages of Condolence Reached the Family From Various Parts of Texas - Remains Interred in Magnolia Cemetery. With sad and impressive funeral rites and ceremonies all that was mortal of the late Samuel Hopkins McGary was laid tenderly and lovingly to rest in Magnolia cemetery this afternoon, the funeral taking place from the residence at 5 o'clock. Sorrowing friends of the deceased gathered in large numbers at the home on North Grand avenue, and the funeral cortege which followed the remains to their last resting place was one of the largest ever seen in Beaumont. Impressive services were conducted at the home by Rev. C.A. Ridgely, pastor of the First Baptist church, and at the cemetery by Rev. J.A. Smart, pastor of the Magnolia Avenue Baptist church. Appropriate music was furnished by a quartet from the First Methodist church choir, and there was a great profusion of beautiful flowers, emblems and wreaths, among which was one exquisite wreath in the form of a cross sent by the printers of the Beaumont Journal. There was another beautiful floral emblem from the printers and allied printing crafts of Beaumont, while a beautiful floral emblem in the form of a star with the letters "T.A.P." was presented on behalf of the Texas Afternoon Press association, through its president, Marcellus E. Foster of Houston. The following were active pallbearers at the funeral: Col. W.S. Davidson, George W. Carroll, J. Frank Keith, John M. Gilbert, E.A. Fletcher, William Wiess, Ras Landry and Jake Giles. At a meeting of the printing and newspaper craft of Beaumont this afternoon resolutions of respect anent the death of Mr. McGary were adopted. Samuel H. McGary was editor of the Beaumont Journal and one of the best newspaper men of Texas. He was the son of "Uncle Daniel" McGary, for many years editor of the Houston Age, who died in Beaumont about five years ago. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Samuel W. Foster of Beaumont and Mrs. Eugene H. Baker of Hot Springs, South Dakota. He leaves one brother, Percy McGary of Cleveland, Texas, a half brother at Dallas and a half sister, Mrs. Lemmon, residing in California. Mr. McGary was born at Washington, Texas, forty-two years ago and was twice married. Seventeen years ago he married Miss Lida Stroupe of Bryan, Texas, and of this marriage three children were born, who survive their father. They are Miss Edna, Miss Statira, and Miss Sammie, all residents of this city. Eight years ago Mr. McGary married Miss Cornelia Ligon of Beaumont, and of this marriage one child was born, Kirby Call, a boy 5 years of age.
