Kenneth L. Cornell, 66, of Sheridan passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 31, 2000 at 7pm at the Church of Christ on Big Horn Avenue with Charlie Spray, minister, officiating. Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion, Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at 3pm at Mount Hope Cemetery in Springview, Nebraska. memorials may be made to the Elks Youth Scholarship Fund in Sheridan or Ainsworth, Nebraska in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, PO Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Kenneth LeRoy was born August 3, 1934 on a farm near Mills, Nebraska to Ella Williams and Warren Cornell. His father, sister, LuEllen McConnell, older brothers, Emmitt and Lawrence (Pistol) and younger brother, Dick, all preceded him in death. His mother Ella Cornell Hamilton resides at Parkside Manor in Stuart, Nebraska.
Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Vonnie Biggins and husband Rick, and grandchildren Heather and Jonathan. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Arlene Cornell Sheldon of Kearney, Nebraska, Chris Cornell and children, Kendra and Bradley of Newport, Nebraska as well as other nephews, nieces, and many dear friends of many years.
Kenneth was a 1952 graduate of Keya Paha County High School with a certificate to teach rural school for one year. However, at a dance that August with several classmates, they all decided to join the Armed Services. After basic training at Parks Air Force Base in California, he was assigned to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, nevada as an administrative clerk. The F-100 pilots started training at Nellis and Kenneth was assigned to them as supply specialist in charge of spare parts for each engine. This team became the Thunderbirds.
The next assignment took him to Morocco for a year in he capacity of supply sergeant. The Camp Crook Army base was renamed Van Den Berg AFB in Lompac, California so Kenneth was assigned the laborious task of processing all the paper work for the renaming processes.
While on leave at home before going to Germany, he saw a former classmate and dating friends and reestablished that relationship. At the finish of the Germany assignment, Kenneth and Tillie Lowe were married and moved back to California. Kenneth adopted Tillie's daughter, Vonnie at the time. The family then moved to Hawaii during which time Kenneth became tech sergeant to help support problems in Asia. Kenneth served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Kenneth chose to retire from military service after 20 years and was preparing to be discharged when he was diagnosed with lupus...thus obtaining a medical discharge.
Kenneth and family returned to Offut AFB in Omaha, Nebraska for his discharge and stayed in Nebraska because of family business. Kenneth, Tillie and friends used retirement to tour and vacation on their Kawaski 750 bikes until his health degenerated. After months of hospitalization in Grand Island, Omaha, and Kearney VA hospitals, he lost the use of his legs and lost his marriage. However, the spirit of survivorship prevailed and he did walk on crutches after the doctors assured him he would live in a wheelchair. He set up housekeeping in Ainsworth, Nebraska where he met a blonde, blue eyed freckled Wyoming nurse. Kenneth Cornell and Phyllis Geier, formerly of Sheridan, were united in marriage in Sheridan, February 15, 1997, where the two of them established residency.
Kenneth was a lifetime member of Sergeant's Association, VFW, and a 50 year member of the Elks Lodge in Ainsworth, Nebraska. Kenneth and Phyllis enjoyed fishing together and using their motorhome and even managed to take one more trip to the Texas coast in February of this year.
