CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY - State Police and a helper Christmas day remove the body on one of two young Carlsbad men killed in an accident north of the city. The accident apparently happened late Christmas Eve. The wreckage was not discovered until Christmas morning.

Funeral services are pending for one of two Carlsbad men killed in a one car accident on the outskirts of the city Christmas Eve.
Dead are Don Shelby Phillips, 27, a former City policeman, and Jerry Lee Hammer, 20, and were employed by Southwest Potash.
The accident happened about five miles north of the city on the truck bypass from U. S Highway 285 to West Lea Street, State Police said.
The mishap apparently happened about 10 p.m. Christmas Eve. The wreckage was not discovered until 8 a.m. Christmas day.
Services for Phillips will be conducted by D. Wallace of the Artesia Church of Latter Day Saints at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Paulin Funeral Home Chapel, Artesia. Arrangements here were by Carpenter Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Lower Hope Cemetery.
Phillips, who formerly worked with the Carlsbad Police Department, is survived by his widow, Marcia Brummett Phillips, Carlsbad; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Phillips, Artesia; two sisters, Mrs. Patricia Johnson, Carlsbad, and Mrs. Treva Mc Culley, Roswell; two brothers, Jack Phillips, Olney Springs, Colo., and Dwight Phillips, Artesia; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs James A. Phillips, Buckeye, Ariz., and Mrs. Annie Peden, Hope.
Hammer, born here Nov. 4, 1943, was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, State workers Local 181 and Co. B. Fifth Me______ Tank Battalion, 35th Armored Division here.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Imogene Hammer, Carlsbad; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Hammer, Carlsbad; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hammer, Henrietta [Henryetta], Okla., and Mrs. Maude Leonard, Muskogee, Okla., one brother Harry Dean Hammer, Carlsbad;
and two sisters, Kathryn Ann Hammer and Vickie C. Hammer, both of Carlsbad.
Services will arranged by West Funeral Home Chapel.
State Police estimated Phillips car was traveling about 80 miles per hour when it left the highway and rolled over and down a 12-foot embankment. Both driver Phillips and Hammer were thrown out of the car.
Phillips earlier had been cautioned about speeding.
