C. Bird Pate was the son of Jeremiah Pate and Catherine Fry. He came with his father and siblings from Montgomery County, Virginia to Dearborn County, Indiana in 1813. (This date of arrival in 1813 is according to the book, "The History of Dearborn County, Indiana" which discusses C. Bird's brother, Adam Pate, and his father, Jeremiah Pate. C. Bird had a will proven in Dearborn County Probate Court in August 1850 which named his wife, Clarissa, and his 3 sons, George, Alfred, and C. Bird Jr. His son's, George Pate's, 1930 Indiana death certificate names his father as "C. Bird Pate" and his mother as "Clarissa Helms." There is no documentation to prove what the "C." in C. Bird Pate's name stood for. All censuses, land records, his father's land deed that named all his children (including C. Bird), etc. always listed his name as "C. Bird Pate."
