Presumably named for his father's brother, who migrated to the area with Allen Brooks ca. 1830.

Per his gr-neph (via Phoebe Carter Brooks Williams Gray), Judge Thomas Battle Carroll of Starkville (though he was born & raised in the Agency-Crawford area & knew John's siblings Phoebe, Martin & Elizabeth Brooks & other descendants of Allen Brooks): He married Miss ___ and was left a widower."

I'd take that with a grain of salt.
