Ada "Louise" (Maris) Crockett
1927 - 2009
Ada "Louise" Maris Crockett was born in Flint, Michigan, on October 27, 1927, to Charles Wade Maris and Ruth Henrietta Sherman Maris. She died from complications of lung cancer January 10, 2009, in Woodburn, Oregon. Although her early years were in the Midwest, Mom embraced the West when her family moved to Glendale CA in 1936 following her father's aviation career. With World War II looming, the family was relocated to a ranch in the rolling hills outside Myrtle Creek, Oregon in 1942. In August 1948 she married Jack Edward Crockett, the brother of her sister's husband, and they set off for Kingsville, Texas, where they lived in Quonset huts on an old Navy base while Jack finished his engineering degree on the GI Bill and the first of their three children was born. Returning to Myrtle Creek, two more children soon joined the family. Job transfers found them in Bandon, Coquille, Grants Pass, Hermiston, Salem, Astoria, Gold Beach, and Eugene.
Divorced in 1981, 'Weezy' delivered newspapers for The Eugene Register-Guard, graduated from business courses at Lane Community College, and enjoyed friendships with many CB radio buddies. Mom was gifted with a beautiful voice, perfect pitch, and played the piano expertly. As "Silent Lady", she often sang over the radio, filling requests from passing truck drivers while accompanying herself on her keyboard. She made friends easily, accepting everyone at face value, and gathered a large extended family. Louise is survived by sons Kenneth Edward (Nancy) and Jon Wade, and daughter Debra Lea (Michael) Meaghers of Salem; sisters Marilyn Blankenship of Myrtle Creek and Sandi (Terry) Norcott of Roseburg, and brother Jerry (Marion) Maris of Cornelius.
Louise lived her last years at French Prairie Rehabilitation Center in Woodburn where she provided staff and residents with all kinds of knitted and crocheted handiwork. The family gratefully thanks the staff for their loving care, especially Patty, Bridget, Betty, Norma and Mary Richards. A family celebration of her life will be held in March in Myrtle Creek, with inurnment at Myrtle Creek IOOF Cemetery.
